There are many times in India when I don’t understand the rules.  For example I was at a mall and I wanted to eat in the food court.  I ordered and they said I had to have a pre-paid card to pay with.  OK…so I went and got a pre-paid card…no big deal…I didn’t know the rules.  But when it comes to driving, I REALLY don’t get it.  The best way I can describe driving in India is like taking 100 5 year olds to a go cart track that’s meant to hold 50 and not telling them anything and just let them drive.  That’s what it’s like in India.  Oh, and you have to give the 5 year olds horns…really loud horns to honk and play with.  I’m told there are rules but no one follows them.  First, they drive on the left side which takes some getting used to for an American.  And just because they are supposed to drive on the left side doesn’t mean that they do. But they also have all types of transportation on the road at the same time.  There are cars, trucks, bicycles, rickshaws, tuk tuks, mopeds, pedestrians (there are almost no sidewalks) and cows all competing to get somewhere fast and all with horns (except for the cows who aren’t in a hurry).  They honk the horns for everything.  They honk when they run a red light so they don’t get hit, they honk when they turn a corner, they honk when coming to an intersection, they honk when you are in their way, they honk when they do anything.  It seems honking is the alternative to using turn signals or following the traffic signs.   If there is a red light people might slow down and then they keep going.  They also love round abouts here. I guess that’s because no one stops at stop lights so they just make round abouts instead of intersections.  Oh…and there are also about 25 million people here in Delhi…more than twice the size of NYC.  Most of the time I just hold on and close my eyes when I can’t take it anymore.  Or I take the metro :)
